Functional Footwear and the path to longevity
Move well, buy smart, be nice to your body and the planet.
Quick update before we dive in: Turriff Footwear is officially out in the wild, and the feedback has been fantastic! It has been great to hear about how you're enjoying your shoes and the adventures you are taking them on. I've added a testimonials section on the website (turriffshoes.com) showcasing some of your kind words, but I also wanted to share a few highlights here, which you can find at the bottom of the newsletter.
Longevity and your shoes.
While studying Fine Arts, I resisted the idea that art needed a conceptual framework, drawn instead to "art for art's sake" and the pursuit of beauty. Somehow, Turriff Footwear, while designed for maximum usability and functionality, has unintentionally been fuelled by a sort of conceptual intention. This intention aims to amplify the positive benefits and function footwear can offer the wearer and the world. It also aims to combat the shortcomings I observed in the footwear industry and contemporary footwear, which I generally feel prioritize conceptual design over functional use and need.
At Turriff Footwear, longevity is a key design concept. We see it in two crucial ways: the lifespan of our product and the enduring functional movement of the wearer.
First, we craft footwear built to last. Turriff Footwear is an investment that only gets better with time. Our shoes are made with premium leather, which softens with wear and molds to your feet, creating a truly personalized fit. We don’t want you to have to buy multiple pairs of shoes to fill the gaps in your footwear lineup. We expect your Turriff Functional Footwear to take a beating and travel with you through your daily routines for many years. That is why our shoes are made with premium natural materials and are designed with easy repair in mind. The durable, water-resistant construction uses a combination of Blake stitch and Stitchdown techniques, but crucially we avoid stitching directly through the outsole. This means your local cobbler (or me if you wish to send your shoes back in to Turriff headquarters) can easily peel off and replace the outsole (and the cushioned EVA midsole if necessary) without damaging the upper or leather midsole. With proper care, you should easily get two or three resoles, extending the life of your shoes significantly before considering a more involved re-crafting.

When I think about longevity I am not only thinking about the life of the shoe. Our minimalist, zero drop, anatomical wide toe box design encourages a greater awareness of impact during movement and a greater sense of proprioception, which is the bodies awareness of its position and movement in space. In overly cushioned shoes, we can become accustomed to heavy impacts, letting the shoe absorb the shock rather than our own muscles. Studies show that elevated heel and ultra cushioned shoes encourage forceful heel strikes which in turn transfer more stress to our knees and hips. This extra stress causes our joints to wear down faster, resulting in stiffness, reduced range of motion, and decreased strength.
Alternatively wearing zero-drop, minimal cushioned shoes encourage the wearer to slow down and move with care and intention. By wearing footwear that allows you to feel the ground and your impacts, you naturally learn to move with more awareness, engaging your muscles to cushion and propel you. This mindful movement is key to long-term physical well-being, helping you stay comfortable, confident, and active for years to come.
Longevity is a concept that extends far beyond footwear. As a shoemaker, I see it clearly in the materials chosen and the methods used to craft the shoes. But it's a principle we should apply to all aspects of our lives. By considering the future – our own health and the health of our planet – we can make choices today that lead to a more comfortable and sustainable tomorrow for yourself and for the planet. Choosing well-made, repairable goods crafted from natural materials is a step in that direction, reducing waste and supporting a future where both our bodies and our environment can thrive.
What our Functional Friends are saying:
Chad G. who wears the C-02 in Repello Calf Suede says:
“I have a lot of pairs of boots and shoes, regardless of quality/cost the ones that get worn the most are the ‘fun’ ones that I enjoy wearing. These are definitely fun.”
Andrew K. who wears the C-01 in Waxy Commander says:
"I’ve gotten to use your shoes on a few hikes & for going out & about. To no surprise, they are the best footwear I’ve ever had. Usually there’s a honeymoon period, then little things start to bother you about the thing you bought, but your shoes just get better & better with wear."
Joe C. who wears the C-01 in Waxy Commander says:
"these are the best general purpose shoes, that I've ever had.”
Edward O.G. - who wears the C-02 in Repello Calf Suede says:
"These are the best fitting shoes I’ve worn. I’ve been standing and running around in them for most of my 12+ hour days since they’ve arrived and have been so thankful at the end of the day when I’ve noticed no complaints from my body about the shoes. Really impressive work."
